Tips on How to Study for the ASVAB

Taking the ASVAB is a major step for those considering careers in the military. To ensure that you are considered for many jobs, and jobs that you actually like, it is important to study for the ASVAB. Here are tips for establishing good study habits.

Pick a day of the week when you can set aside two solid hours of study. Studying for the ASVAB is more effective when you learn the material during longer, uninterrupted sessions. Studying 15 minutes here, 15 minutes there will not be as effective.

Find a place where there are no distractions. For example, a library where there are tables and carrels for quiet studying, or an older relative's house. Avoid listening to your music or eating a lot of junk food while you study ASVAB material. You can't do these things during the actual exam. Make your study environment similar to the testing environment, and you will be calmer on test day.

Take full-length practice tests to discover where your strengths and weaknesses are. Spend more time on the sections that you struggle with to get a balanced score.

Read all the explanations given in your ASVAB study guides. Since the ASVAB questions are all very similar to one another, you will answer more questions correctly if you understand the logic behind the correct answers.

Find a study partner. Having a partner can introduce a competitive element to your ASVAB study that will drive you to earn a higher score. You will also be more motivated to succeed if your goal is to enlist together.

Set weekly or monthly goals for yourself. For example, every week you take a practice test and your goal is to get 1 or 2 points higher. Setting score goals will keep you motivated while you study for the ASVAB.
