How to Draw a Triple Moon

The Triple Moon symbol depicts the waxing, full, and waning stages of the Moon. In Wicca and Neo-Paganism, the symbol may represent the Goddess, though its exact interpretation varies by faith and individual. Sometimes called the Triple Goddess symbol, the poet Robert Graves took it to represent the three stages of womanhood--maiden, mother, and crone.

The symbol is popular in jewelry and spiritual/religious items, and you can use simple geometry to draw your own perfectly symmetric Triple Moon.

Tools

Graphics software or pencil, ruler, and compass.

Instructions

Step 1: Along a straight line, draw three circles with equal radii such that the outer two circles are tangent to the inner circle.

Step 2: Along the line and within one of the outer circles, mark a point between the circle's center and the end of the line, making the point closer to the end of the line (about 2/3 of the way.) Repeat for the other outer circle. See blue dots in the figure below.

Step 3: Next, mark the North and South poles of the outer circles. See purple dots in the figure below.

Step 4: Draw a circle centered at a blue dot that passes through the nearest pair of purple dots. This circle will be larger than the other three circles and will cut a crescent shape from one of the outer circles. Repeat on the other side.

You now have a symmetric Triple Moon emblem that you can use as a pattern for jewelry, fabric, or signage.
